The 5 Phases Of Successful Software Implementations

Most implementation methodologies will contain a number of phases, which will be defined in a manner similar to the following:

Phase 1 – Discovery

The discovery phase enables you to understand what it is that you want to achieve, get buy in from your management team and define the strategy that you are going to use to get you there. You will need to work through a detailed requirements gathering process, involving multiple people within your organisation, individually or through some workshops.

Phase 2 – Planning

The planning phase enables you to plan out the key elements of you implementation project. This includes the project team, including internal and external resources, the project schedule, and detailed project plan, including deliverables.

Phase 3 – Design

The design phase enables you to define your processes and procedures, and should include an opportunity to do some prototyping, that will give you a better understanding of the end result. This will also enable you to look beyond what it is you are doing now, and enable an opportunity to come up with some future concepts that will enhance your business. This also will enable you to look at any interface requirements that you might have with other business solutions that you have.

Phase 4 – Integration

The integration phase is the phase that enables you define how you are going to integrate the solutions into your business, and includes any additional enhancements that may be required, testing and training. This phase will also allow you to deliver a pilot solution should you require one.

Phase 5 – Delivery

The delivery phase is that actual roll out of the solution within your business. This includes the go live schedule, any back out and maintenance plans. This stage also includes the management of the success criteria and the sign off from the business.
